Why Fertilization Matters More Than You Think

Your lawn is a living system. Every summer we see Missouri homeowners struggling with thin turf, weak roots, and aggressive weeds. The difference between a decent lawn and a thriving one often comes down to knowing exactly what nutrients your soil needs, when to apply them, and how to keep weeds from stealing what you’re putting down.

This is The Maedgen Way. We don’t use one-size-fits-all programs. We don’t cut corners. Every property gets analyzed, every season gets planned, and every application gets timed for maximum effectiveness.

Our Fertilization Program

Most lawn care companies sell you 4-5 generic applications a year. We do better. Our program is tailored to your soil and timed to Missouri’s seasons.

  • Spring Green-Up (March-April) – Balanced fertilizer with higher nitrogen to jump-start green growth and root development
  • Early Summer Strengthening (May-June) – Complete fertilizer with essential micronutrients to build root depth and turf density
  • Midsummer Stress Management (July-August) – Optional lighter application to support the lawn through heat stress
  • Fall Transition (September-October) – High-potassium formula that strengthens roots, improves winter hardiness, and sets your lawn up for aggressive spring growth
  • Winter Root Development (November-December) – Late-season low-nitrogen application to encourage deep root growth during dormancy

Understanding NPK Ratios

You might see fertilizer labels showing numbers like “24-0-6.” Those are NPK ratios: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium. We select different ratios for different seasons and conditions because your lawn in July needs something completely different than your lawn in October.

Nitrogen (N)

Drives green color and leaf growth. Higher ratios equal greener grass, but too much pushes weak, disease-prone growth.

Phosphorus (P)

Builds root systems and improves stress tolerance. Crucial in spring and fall applications.

Potassium (K)

Strengthens cell walls, improves weather tolerance, and enhances overall plant hardiness.

Pre-Emergent & Post-Emergent Weed Control

Weeds aren’t a lawn problem. They’re a symptom of lawn weakness. But that doesn’t mean you just accept them. We use a two-pronged approach:

Pre-Emergent Herbicides (March-April)

These create an invisible barrier that prevents weed seeds from germinating. One application stops crabgrass, chickweed, and foxtail before they even start. This is where most homeowners fail. They wait until weeds are visible, then try to kill them. We stop them before they’re born.

Post-Emergent Treatments (May-September)

When weeds do show up, we hit them with selective herbicides that kill the weed without damaging your grass. Dandelions, plantain, clover: each gets the right solution. Some are best handled with spraying, others with spot treatments. We know the difference.

Organic & Alternative Options

Not every property needs heavy chemical applications. We offer organic fertilization programs using natural nutrient sources: composted materials, slow-release organic compounds, and biological stimulants that work with your soil’s natural processes. They work a little slower but deliver real results without synthetic chemicals.

We also offer integrated weed management, combining proper fertilization, mowing height adjustment, and targeted treatments to minimize herbicide use while maximizing weed suppression.

Seasonal Calendar for Missouri Lawns

  • March & April: Spring green-up application + pre-emergent for crabgrass
  • May: Monitor for post-emergent needs; apply if dandelions appear
  • June: Early summer strengthening application
  • July: Monitor; optional mid-summer application for premium programs
  • August: Assessment and any needed post-emergent spot treatments
  • September: Fall transition application begins (this is critical)
  • October: Complete fall fertilization; monitor for winter weeds
  • November-December: Optional winter root development application

Why Choose Maedgen’s for Fertilization & Weed Control

Targeted weed control that eliminates invasive plants without harming your turf.

Soil Testing First

Every property gets a University of Missouri soil test in year one. We know exactly what your soil needs before we apply anything.

Precision Timing

We apply fertilizer when your grass is ready to use it, not when it’s convenient for us. In Missouri’s unpredictable climate, timing is everything.

Custom Programs

A lawn with slightly acidic soil gets different treatment than one that’s neutral. A soil low in potassium needs emphasis on fall applications. No generic programs here.

30 Years of Results

Since 1992, Maedgen’s properties have looked noticeably better than surrounding lawns. That’s the difference real expertise makes.

What Homeowners Often Get Wrong

  • Trying to do it themselves: Homeowner fertilizers are often lower quality and applied at the wrong rates. You end up spending almost as much for worse results.
  • Waiting until weeds are established: A pre-emergent application costs $40-60. Killing an established dandelion population costs $200+. Prevention beats treatment every time.
  • Expecting results in one season: A lawn transforms over 2-3 seasons. The first year builds soil and starts patterns. By year three, your lawn performs at a level most homeowners never achieve.
  • Skipping fall applications: This is the biggest mistake we see. Fall is when your lawn decides whether next year will be strong or weak. Properties that commit to serious fall programs always outperform.
