Why Annuals Work

Crew planting celosia and ornamental grass around a patio
Our crew installs every plant by hand for precise spacing and healthy root contact.

Continuous Bloom

Unlike perennials that bloom for 2-4 weeks, annuals bloom continuously all season. Constant color from planting until frost.

Design Flexibility

New varieties come out every year. Endless color and form options. Try something completely different each season.

High Impact

Annuals deliver dramatic color impact. A garden of annual flowers is impossible to miss and transforms any property.

Maintenance Clarity

Plant once per season, enjoy them, and refresh. No year-round commitment. Growing conditions change, and annuals let you adapt.

What We Plant, Season by Season

Spring Plantings (May)

After last frost (typically mid-May in Missouri), we plant spring annuals that bloom through summer.

  • Impatiens – Shade-loving color machine with hundreds of color combinations
  • Marigolds – Heat and drought tolerant with bright, bold colors
  • Zinnias – Easy, productive, colorful; seem to bloom more when harvested as cut flowers
  • Petunias – Vigorous growers that provide continuous color through heat stress
  • Dusty Miller – Silver/gray foliage that provides texture and sophistication
  • Begonias – Elegant, shade-tolerant, continuous color without deadheading
  • Vinca (Periwinkle) – Extremely heat and drought tolerant; blooms when others fade
  • Sunflowers – Bold statement plants from 2 to 8+ feet; pollinator magnets
  • Bachelor’s Buttons – Easy, prolific bloomer that attracts butterflies
  • Sweet Alyssum – Short edging plant with fragrant tiny flowers

Summer Plantings (June–July)

Summer plantings extend color through peak heat and into early fall. These varieties are bred specifically for summer performance.

  • Celosia (Cockscomb) – Vibrant colors, dramatic flower form, loves heat
  • Salvia – Sophisticated spiky flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies
  • Melampodium – Cheerful yellow flowers, practically indestructible in heat
  • Desert Rose – Sculptural plants with exotic flowers, minimal water needs
  • Lantana – Butterfly magnet, extremely heat tolerant, changes color as flowers age
  • Verbena – Heat lover with cascading and upright varieties available
  • New Guinea Impatiens – More sun-tolerant than regular impatiens, vibrant colors
  • Torenia – Sophisticated orchid-like flowers, performs well in heat and humidity

Fall Plantings (August–September)

As summer heat fades, we plant cool-season annuals that bloom through fall and until frost.

  • Mums – Classic fall flower in hundreds of varieties and colors
  • Pansies & Violas – Cool-season lovers that bloom through fall and even winter in mild years
  • Calendula – Cheerful orange/yellow edible flowers that bloom until hard frost
  • Snapdragons – Cool-season bloomers; more sophisticated than their reputation suggests
  • Ornamental Kale – Dramatic foliage color in purples, pinks, and whites
  • Asters – Daisy-like flowers in fall colors; underutilized and sophisticated
  • Chrysanthemums – More refined than typical fall mums with extended blooming
  • Ornamental Cabbage – Foliage-focused structure and color through late fall and early winter

Our Selection Strategy

Every planting plan is custom designed for your property. Here is how we approach it:

  • Color Combinations – We consider existing landscaping and home colors for complementary palettes
  • Height Layering – Tall plants in back, medium in middle, short in front for visual depth
  • Texture Mix – Varied foliage textures (fine, bold, ferny) create visual interest beyond flower color
  • Performance Matching – Sun-loving plants in sun, shade plants in shade, heat-tolerant where needed

Continuous Color Calendar

Here’s how we achieve non-stop color through the entire season:

Late April

Spring annuals go in, bloom for 4-5 months

Mid-July

Summer plantings supplement or replace spring, bloom through heat

Mid-August

Fall plantings provide color through frost

Next Spring

Spring plantings refresh the cycle

Maintenance & Container Programs

Annual flowers need maintenance to perform their best. We offer full-service care including deadheading, watering, monthly fertilization, pest and disease management, and seasonal transitions.

We also create sophisticated container combinations for patios, entries, walkways, and decks. Our seasonal container service covers spring plantings, summer refreshes, and fall transitions so your containers change beautifully as seasons change.

Cost & Value

Annual flower programs range from modest (a few spring plantings) to comprehensive (spring/summer/fall plantings plus container programs). Every program delivers:

  • Continuous color from spring through fall
  • Professional design and installation
  • Dramatic curb appeal improvement
  • Fresh design options annually
  • Support for local pollinators (butterflies and hummingbirds)
