What We Plant, Season by Season
Spring Plantings (May)
After last frost (typically mid-May in Missouri), we plant spring annuals that bloom through summer.
- Impatiens – Shade-loving color machine with hundreds of color combinations
- Marigolds – Heat and drought tolerant with bright, bold colors
- Zinnias – Easy, productive, colorful; seem to bloom more when harvested as cut flowers
- Petunias – Vigorous growers that provide continuous color through heat stress
- Dusty Miller – Silver/gray foliage that provides texture and sophistication
- Begonias – Elegant, shade-tolerant, continuous color without deadheading
- Vinca (Periwinkle) – Extremely heat and drought tolerant; blooms when others fade
- Sunflowers – Bold statement plants from 2 to 8+ feet; pollinator magnets
- Bachelor’s Buttons – Easy, prolific bloomer that attracts butterflies
- Sweet Alyssum – Short edging plant with fragrant tiny flowers
Summer Plantings (June–July)
Summer plantings extend color through peak heat and into early fall. These varieties are bred specifically for summer performance.
- Celosia (Cockscomb) – Vibrant colors, dramatic flower form, loves heat
- Salvia – Sophisticated spiky flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies
- Melampodium – Cheerful yellow flowers, practically indestructible in heat
- Desert Rose – Sculptural plants with exotic flowers, minimal water needs
- Lantana – Butterfly magnet, extremely heat tolerant, changes color as flowers age
- Verbena – Heat lover with cascading and upright varieties available
- New Guinea Impatiens – More sun-tolerant than regular impatiens, vibrant colors

Fall Plantings (August–September)
As summer heat fades, we plant cool-season annuals that bloom through fall and until frost.
- Mums – Classic fall flower in hundreds of varieties and colors
- Pansies & Violas – Cool-season lovers that bloom through fall and even winter in mild years
- Calendula – Cheerful orange/yellow edible flowers that bloom until hard frost
- Snapdragons – Cool-season bloomers; more sophisticated than their reputation suggests
- Ornamental Kale – Dramatic foliage color in purples, pinks, and whites
- Asters – Daisy-like flowers in fall colors; underutilized and sophisticated
- Chrysanthemums – More refined than typical fall mums with extended blooming
- Ornamental Cabbage – Foliage-focused structure and color through late fall and early winter
